As a founding member of the Ecart Group in Geneva, Armleder has been described as an artist adhering to the Fluxus tradition, yet such a description inadequately conveys or encompasses his eclecticism, extending beyond an orientation towards randomness and chance. The vigor with which Armleder embraces stylistic or formal approaches relates to the exchanges between symbolic and utilitarian value. Ironically describing his artwork as “furnishing”, Armleder exploits the ambivalence between decorating and painting, combining found objects and motifs with as much reverence as references to art historical styles.
